How Color and Typography Interact: The Four Variables That Control Reading Comfort
Color is not independent of type. A typographic hierarchy built on size and weight alone is disrupted the moment color is introduced — a small label in vivid red will dominate a large heading in pale gray, regardless of the intended hierarchy. This issue systematizes the four variables that determine whether color and type work together or against each other: luminance contrast, color temperature, saturation level, and the spatial distribution of chromatic and achromatic text.
